The Numerology of Mushrooms installation was a collaborative project with Mikhail Moosa commissioned by Ontario Place as part of Lumiere: The Art of Light.
The installation is a place for peaceful meditation, where one can sit surrounded by 33 unique glowing mushrooms. 8 of these mushrooms are larger, symbolizing the dharmachakra and the eightfold path. This is to remind us of the right view, resolve, speech, conduct, livelihood, effort, mindfulness, and samadhi (a meditative state). The tree stump in the center sharing the same light as the 8 mushrooms represents samsara and the journey of 1 to 9, inviting one person at a time to enter the circle and complete the cycle from 9 to 10. Nine being a powerful number that represents completion but not a final ending. Completing the cycle by joining the circuit is a recognition of life's ongoing ebb and flow. The never ending cycle of the transfer of energies transforming, ever growing and renewing. Mushrooms are tied to trees; as their communicators, their fertilizer, and their consumer. This perpetual symbiotic relationship represents the theme of renewal. As humans we are part of this cycle. We are what eats us.
The Numerology of Mushrooms invites one person at a time to enter the circle, take a seat and feel connected. Connected to the circuit, to a larger ebb and flow, and feel renewed.
